The framework identifies several key factors that influence scalability in agentic architectures. These include an LLM’s intelligence index, the number of agents, tools, and coordination metrics. It reveals three significant effects impacting system performance: the tool-coordination trade-off, capability saturation, and topology-dependent error amplification.
The researchers classify agentic architectures into four main types: independent, centralized, decentralized, and hybrid. For each classification, they predict the optimal coordination strategy with an impressive accuracy rate of 87% on held-out data. Importantly, the framework suggests that financial reasoning tasks tend to perform better under centralized orchestration, whereas decentralized approaches are more effective for tasks like web navigation.
Instead of replacing multi-agent systems, smarter foundational models accelerate the need for well-architected designs. This strengthens the argument for tailored agentic architectures as AI systems become increasingly intelligent and complex.
