Google has integrated Gemini's Agent Mode into Android Studio Narwhal preview, enabling AI-powered multi-step development tasks across multiple files. Unlike simple chat interactions, Agent Mode uses the entire project as context and can directly modify code, handle complex refactoring, generate unit tests, and perform routine tasks like migrating hardcoded strings or adding dark mode support. The agent works step-by-step with developer review and feedback, supports Model Context Protocol for external tool integration, and is available with both free and Pro Gemini tiers. While still in preview with some reported limitations, it aims to automate time-consuming tasks and free developers for more creative work.
