Google just made Gemini and NotebookLM the same tool, here's what that actually changes

Google has introduced a Notebooks feature for paid Google Pro subscribers that syncs sources between Gemini and NotebookLM, eliminating the need to re-upload documents when switching between the two tools. Previously, users had to manage both products independently, re-uploading files and rebuilding source lists each time they moved from Gemini's broad web search to NotebookLM's source-locked analysis. The new integration creates a shared knowledge base: sources added in one app automatically appear in the other, enabling a smoother research workflow from broad synthesis to deep document analysis. However, the two apps still have separate interfaces and the sync is source-level only, not session-level, meaning mid-conversation context in Gemini cannot be pushed directly into NotebookLM.
