Google has announced Cloud Fraud Defense at its Next '26 conference as the successor to reCAPTCHA. The platform expands beyond bot detection to cover broader fraud scenarios including account takeovers, fake account creation, and payment fraud. It uses machine learning and Google's threat intelligence to evaluate activity from humans, bots, and AI agents. Existing reCAPTCHA customers are automatically migrated with no action required, and the same APIs and site keys remain in place. The service provides risk scores and reason codes, offers 10,000 free assessments per month, and is designed to replace disruptive CAPTCHA puzzles with silent background verification.
