Google Drive for desktop now includes AI-powered ransomware detection that monitors file activity for malicious encryption attempts. When suspicious behavior is detected, the system automatically pauses syncing and alerts users via desktop and email, allowing them to restore files to previous safe states. The AI model is trained on millions of ransomware samples and continuously adapts using threat intelligence from VirusTotal. The feature is rolling out in open beta at no extra cost for most Google Workspace commercial plans, with admin controls available through the Admin console.
