Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard enabling AI shopping agents to handle end-to-end commerce workflows from product discovery to checkout and post-purchase management. Co-developed with Shopify, Target, Walmart, Etsy, and Wayfair, UCP standardizes commerce capabilities through business profiles, supports multiple payment providers with separated credential and payment processing, and works across standard APIs, Agent2Agent, and Model Context Protocol. The protocol includes sample Python implementations and will initially power checkout experiences in Google Search and Gemini app for U.S. retailers, with planned expansion to India, Indonesia, and Latin America.
