Passkeys offer a passwordless authentication solution using public key cryptography, eliminating password storage and phishing risks. The WebAuthn standard enables browsers and operating systems to act as authenticators, creating device-bound credentials that are synchronized across platforms. ASP.NET Core in .NET 10 provides built-in passkey support through ASP.NET Identity with Blazer templates, requiring schema version 3 for Entity Framework migrations. Critical implementation considerations include setting the relying party ID correctly (as it's permanent), handling subdomain authentication scenarios, and avoiding user-generated content on authentication domains to prevent credential exposure.
