GNOME 50 has dropped Google Drive integration because libgdata, the library bridging GNOME apps and Google APIs, went unmaintained for nearly four years and has now been archived on GitLab. GVFS dropped its libgdata dependency about ten months ago, and GNOME Online Accounts no longer offers the Files toggle under Google provider settings as a result. A further complication was that libgdata was the last reason libsoup2 remained in the GNOME stack, a library already being phased out and carrying multiple open CVEs including HTTP request smuggling and authentication flaws. GNOME developer Michael Catanzaro noted a public call for a maintainer was made back in December 2022 with no response. The author speculatively suggests Google could step in and assign developers to restore the integration.
