GNOME 50, codenamed Tokyo, has been released with the most significant change being the complete removal of X11 session support in favor of Wayland-only operation. X11 apps still run via XWayland, but users can no longer log into an X11 session. Other improvements include better accessibility (overhauled Orca screen reader, reduced animations option), enhanced parental controls with screen-time limits, improved HDR and fractional scaling support, variable refresh rate enhancements, faster GNOME Files with lower memory usage, and document annotation improvements. GNOME 50 will ship as the default desktop in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and Fedora 44, meaning most Ubuntu users will be on it until at least 2028. The author notes that Wayland support on older Nvidia hardware has improved significantly compared to a couple of years ago.
