What’s next for Copilot in Visual Studio

<p>Agentic workloads are cool but at the new rates GitHub Copilot will be charging I feel like people are going to be in for a rude awakening. I did a clean install of Visual Studio Code this weekend and the first thing the onboarding did was prompt me to do was sign into Copilot and then pushed agents this, agents that. They’re simultaneously encouraging more use of agents while switching to a metering mode wherein a handful of requests might exhaust your entire monthly budget. When I work with AI on big refactoring jobs I tend to establish a pattern I want it to follow first, then go into planning mode and create a plan, then it usually takes quite a few more messages back and forth to fix bugs and a final review to make sure that everything is in order. I don’t know how aggressive the token caching will be in a thread but if each time I reply to the agent it counts the same 150,000 tokens (or however many are loaded) another time it’ll be unsustainable.</p>
