Git Live was a real-time visualization project built for GitHub's third annual data challenge. It consumed GitHub's public events API via a Scala backend, pushed data through RabbitMQ, served it to browsers using Node.js and HTML5 server-sent events, and rendered animated arcs on a world map using D3.js. The visualization revealed surprising levels of global collaboration, a concentration of innovation in the US and Europe, and clear activity patterns tied to daylight hours. The post also walks through the visual evolution of the project from early prototypes to the final design.
