MIT researchers developed MechStyle, a system that combines generative AI with physics simulation to create personalized 3D-printable objects that remain structurally sound. Users can upload or select 3D models of everyday items like hooks or vases, then use text or image prompts to customize their appearance. The system uses finite element analysis to simulate structural integrity during AI-driven modifications, ensuring vulnerable areas remain durable. Testing showed MechStyle achieved up to 100% structural viability across 30 different models, compared to only 26% with traditional 3D stylization. The tool enables creation of personalized accessories, home decor, and assistive devices that can withstand daily use after 3D printing.
