Google has released Gemma 4, its most capable open AI model family (ranging from edge devices up to 31B parameters), under the OSI-approved Apache 2.0 license. This marks the first Gemmaverse release under Apache 2.0, providing developers and researchers with clear rights for modification, reuse, and deployment — including local, private execution without cloud dependency. Since the original Gemma launch in 2024, the community has downloaded models over 400 million times and created more than 100,000 variants. The Apache 2.0 licensing is framed as delivering autonomy, control, and licensing clarity to the global developer ecosystem.
