<p>GCC 16.1 is out, the first stable release of the GCC 16 series. Here’s what’s actually changed.</p>
<h2>C++ dialect and new language features</h2>
<p>The C++ frontend now defaults to GNU C++20. The corresponding standard library components are no longer marked experimental.</p>
<p>Several C++26 features land with experimental support:</p>
<ul>
<li>Reflection (<code>-freflection</code>)</li>
<li>Contracts</li>
<li>Expansion statements</li>
<li><code>std::simd</code></li>
</ul>
<p>There’s also a new experimental Algol 68 language frontend, which is either a curiosity or genuinely useful depending on what you’re working on.</p>
<p>Other additions include AMD Zen 6 and Arm AGI CPU support.</p>
<h2>Error messages</h2>
<p>Hierarchical C++ error messages, which were opt-in in GCC 15, are now on by default. The output uses nested bullet points to show exactly where a template or function signature mismatch occurs, rather than dumping a wall of text and leaving you to figure it out.</p>
<p>For machine-readable output, SARIF support has been updated toward the upcoming SARIF 2.2 standard. It now includes nested logical location data and better handling of non-standard control flow like exceptions and <code>longjmp</code>.</p>
<p>The most visually interesting addition is experimental HTML diagnostic output, enabled with <code>-fdiagnostics-add-output=experimental-html</code>. It renders nested stack frames and memory state diagrams interactively. It’s experimental, but worth trying if you’re regularly digging through complex compiler output.</p>
<h2>Static analyzer</h2>
<p>The built-in static analyzer (<code>-fanalyzer</code>) has been substantially reworked. The supergraph was rewritten, memory buffer tracking improved, and there’s now initial C++ support covering exception handling and NRVO.</p>
<p>The C++ analysis is still limited to small examples — scaling issues are being addressed for GCC 17.</p>
<h2>Performance</h2>
<p>Early benchmarks on Fedora 44 with an AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9975WX (Zen 5), 128GB DDR5-5600, using <code>-O3 -march=native</code>, show measurable gains over GCC 15. More thorough comparisons across different hardware and against LLVM/Clang are still in progress.</p>
