PEGI, the European games age-rating body, is overhauling its classification system from June 2026. Games containing paid random items like loot boxes or gacha systems will be rated PEGI 16, while social casino games will receive PEGI 18. Time-limited in-game purchases such as battle passes will earn a PEGI 12 rating, reducible to PEGI 7 if spending controls are off by default. 'Pressure to play' mechanics like daily login streaks will trigger a PEGI 7 rating, with paid battle passes featuring expiring rewards rated PEGI 12. PEGI director Dirk Bosmans cites growing regulatory pressure from the EU's Digital Services Act and Digital Fairness Act, and alignment with Germany's USK system, as key drivers. Based on Germany's experience, roughly 30% of submitted games may be affected, with 1 in 3 of those receiving a higher rating.
