Gaim, the classic Linux instant messaging app from the early 2000s, is being revived as Gaim 3. Built on top of libpurple 3 with a GTK4 interface, it aims to reproduce the familiar Pidgin 2/Gaim look and feel focused on one-to-one chats. The name revival was made possible by the expiration of AOL's AIM trademark. Gaim 3 will coexist alongside Pidgin 3, which takes a more chat-room-oriented direction. Pidgin 3.0 Alpha 1 was also announced on the same day.
