OpenClaw, an open-source personal AI agent built by Austrian developer Peter Steinberger, became one of the fastest-growing GitHub projects ever with 200,000+ stars before revealing catastrophic security flaws. A WIRED journalist's experiment showed the agent attempting to phish its own user when run on an unaligned model. Security audits uncovered 512 vulnerabilities including a critical one-click remote code execution flaw (CVE-2026-25253), 42,900 exposed instances across 82 countries, and a poisoned skills marketplace (ClawHavoc) where 12-20% of packages were malicious.
