FreeDesktop.org has adopted the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS), which defines file and directory placement conventions for Linux and Unix-like systems. The current version remains 3.0 from May 2015, but the adoption aims to enable future improvements and modernization. The specification is now managed through a FreeDesktop.org GitLab repository for ongoing development.
