A maker retrofitted a 2006 black polycarbonate MacBook (model A1181) with a Framework laptop mainboard, creating what they call a 'FrameBook'. The project involved gutting the original MacBook chassis, 3D printing custom standoffs and I/O shields, soldering the original Apple keyboard/trackpad to work via USB, mounting USB hubs for new ports, fitting a new display panel, replicating the glowing Apple logo with a custom LED, and wiring everything through a Framework input shim. The build took about 3 months and served as a hands-on introduction to soldering and 3D modeling.
