High Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS) using stratospheric dirigibles are emerging as an alternative to low-earth-orbit satellite internet. Companies like Sceye are positioning airships at ~20 km altitude, offering lower latency than LEO satellites, compatibility with standard 4G/5G modems, and reusability. Unlike Google's failed Loon balloon project, these powered dirigibles aren't subject to wind drift. HAPS could also complement existing satellite and ground networks rather than replace them outright.
