A 3-year production report on an open source solid-state storage cluster serving hundreds of VMs across two sites. Out of 208 SATA SSDs deployed, only 5 failures occurred (2.4% failure rate), with mid-range SSDs from SanDisk, Crucial/Micron, and Intel proving highly reliable. No NVMe failures were recorded across 8 Intel DC3600 drives. Supermicro DOM disks had reliability issues that were resolved in a v1.1 hardware revision, though the updated units are slightly smaller, requiring an upgrade to the next size tier. The author reports zero storage outages since moving away from proprietary vendor SANs.
