In this post I've been playing around with Google App Engine, trying to release a simple Rails 5 app, reading logs or setting environment variables. I also attempted a very non-scientific performance benchmark to compare Heroku with the App Engine.

Covers account setup, SDK installation, the deploy process, debugging a missing secret_key_base error, setting environment variables via app.yaml, and an informal performance comparison between Google App Engine (micro instance) and Heroku's free tier. The author found GAE documentation solid and setup surprisingly approachable for a first-timer, with Heroku edging out GAE slightly on response time in an unscientific test.
