Fermyon, a company pioneering WebAssembly-based serverless computing, has been acquired by Akamai Technologies. Founded in 2021, Fermyon built Spin, a developer tool for creating serverless functions with sub-millisecond cold start times, and later partnered with Akamai to launch Fermyon Wasm Functions on Akamai's global edge network. The acquisition enables deeper integration with Akamai's infrastructure, including managed container services and inference cloud capabilities, while Fermyon commits to continuing open source contributions to Spin, SpinKube, Wasmtime, and WASI standards through CNCF and Bytecode Alliance.
