Fedora Linux 43 has been officially released, bringing a suite of updates aimed at improving performance, security, and user experience. This release features the GNOME 49 desktop environment and is powered by the Linux kernel 6.17. A significant highlight of Fedora 43 is the complete transition to Wayland as the sole display server for GNOME, which means the removal of X11 support entirely.
With GNOME 49, Fedora 43 offers enhanced multi-monitor handling, improved hardware support for AMD Ryzen and Intel Xe graphics, as well as better NVIDIA Optimus integration. Other notable features in this release include the introduction of RPM 6.0, which brings strengthened package security through advanced cryptographic fingerprints and multi-key signing.
Fedora 43 also introduces several new default applications, such as the Showtime video player replacing Totem and the Papers document viewer. Users will experience faster GNOME Software performance thanks to optimized Flatpak repository support and enhanced lock screen functionality with options for reboot/shutdown and media controls.
Additionally, the Anaconda WebUI installer, initially introduced in Fedora 42, is now available across all official editions, offering a modern installation experience. Fedora CoreOS has made a shift to OCI image-based updates exclusively and can now be built from base bootc images using standard container tools.
This release sticks to the Fedora project’s philosophy of delivering a stable and well-integrated GNOME desktop environment while making sure that the Linux distribution stays in line with upstream developments and innovations.
