Claude Cowork is an agentic task execution mode in the Claude Desktop app that enables multi-step, autonomous work on knowledge tasks. Unlike standard chat, Cowork maintains persistent context, plans and decomposes tasks into subtasks, and directly accesses local files within user-granted folders. It runs in an isolated VM environment on macOS, supports long-running workflows, and can produce professional outputs like documents and spreadsheets. Currently available as a research preview for Max plan subscribers, it has limitations including no session persistence, no cross-device sync, and macOS-only availability. Users retain full responsibility for granted permissions and should carefully scope folder access and monitor task execution.
