Linus Torvalds has merged a pull request removing 138,161 lines of code from the Linux kernel, eliminating the ISDN subsystem, legacy ATM device drivers, amateur ham radio support, and numerous old PCMCIA-era network adapter drivers. The removals include drivers for 3Com, AMD Lance, SMSC, Fujitsu, and 8390-based adapters. The cleanup was motivated by AI-driven bug reports and code fuzzing surfacing issues in these obsolete drivers, making maintenance a burden with no active users. Linux 7.1 is also removing bus mouse support, beginning to phase out Intel 486 CPU support, and dropping support for Russia's Baikal CPUs.
