<h1>Exploring the Historic UNIX Version 4 Tape from the University of Utah</h1>
<p>The discovery of a 1970s Fourth Edition Research Unix magnetic tape at the University of Utah has provided a fascinating glimpse into computing history. Preserved by the Computer History Museum, this tape contains the raw analog waveform from the original UNIX Version 4 tape, received in June 1974 during the era of the notable Utah Teapot modeling. Available for free download, borrowing, and streaming on the Internet Archive, the archive represents a critical piece of digital heritage.</p>
<p>An extensive restoration process revealed that the tape holds a complete system dump from November 1973. This includes the source code for the UNIX kernel, which had been rewritten in the nascent C programming language. The analysis of this Fourth Edition uncovered a total of 75,676 new lines of code, with about 10% originating from earlier editions. Notably, this version predates the Fifth Edition by approximately eight months.</p>
<p>To further preserve its historical significance, the source code has been integrated into the Unix History Repository on GitHub. This was achieved through creating synthetic Git commits, based on file timestamps, with authorship carefully mapped to the original creators, such as Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie.</p>
