Thunderbird's approach of asking users for donations directly within the software once per year has proven highly effective, more than doubling their donations from ~2.5M to ~6.4M EUR. KDE adopted a similar strategy and also saw significant increases in donations. The author argues that traditional donation campaigns through social media and blogs only reach a subset of users, while in-app requests reach the entire user base. This simple strategy has no downsides and should be copied by other open source projects struggling with funding.
