<h3>The function with 31 parameters</h3>
<p>Not an object with 31 fields. Thirty-one individual parameters. The function signature was so long that the IDE couldn’t display it without scrolling. The 23rd parameter was a boolean called <code>isNotUndeleted</code>. Triple negation. In production. Serving millions of requests.</p>
<h3>The commented-out code museum</h3>
<p>A 200-line block of commented-out code with nested comments explaining why previous commented-out code was commented out. Reading it was like archaeological layers — you could trace the team’s emotional journey through five product pivots. The oldest comment predated the current VCS history by three years.</p>
<h3>The try-catch that catches everything</h3>

<p>This was in a payment processing service. In production. For two years. The “oops” had been logged 2.3 million times.</p>
<h3>The zombie microservice</h3>
<p>A service that nobody remembered deploying, running on an instance nobody remembered provisioning, processing messages from a queue nobody remembered creating. It consumed about $400/month in cloud costs. When someone finally killed it, nothing happened for three weeks — then a dashboard that nobody looked at stopped updating. They turned it back on.</p>
<h2>Why this happens</h2>
<p>These aren’t stories about bad developers. They’re stories about:</p>
<p><strong>Time pressure.</strong> “We’ll fix it next sprint” is the most common lie in software engineering. Technical debt accrues interest, and the minimum payment is always “later.”</p>
<p><strong>Context loss.</strong> The person who wrote it left. The person who understood it moved teams. The documentation was in a Wiki that nobody uses anymore.</p>
<p><strong>Fear of change.</strong> If it works, touching it is risk with no visible reward. Nobody gets promoted for refactoring the config file. You might get fired if you break it.</p>
<p><strong>Organizational incentives.</strong> Most companies reward shipping new features, not maintaining existing ones. The codebase reflects what the organization values.</p>
<h2>The uncomfortable truth</h2>
<p>Your codebase has a room of shame too. It’s not a sign of failure — it’s a sign that your team shipped under real constraints with real deadlines. The failure would be pretending it doesn’t exist.</p>
<p>The best engineering cultures I’ve seen don’t hide their rooms of shame — they schedule time to clean them. One team I worked with had “Shame Friday” where they’d spend 2 hours per week specifically on the code nobody wanted to touch.</p>
