A hands-on walkthrough comparing reactive and blocking Java approaches for processing streaming ADS-B aircraft data. Using Project Reactor with MongoDB's Reactive Streams driver and Kafka, the author builds two equivalent applications and benchmarks them. The reactive version processed 119,211 messages in 2 minutes versus 17,172 for the blocking version at 1,000 msg/sec. Key concepts covered include Mono, Flux, flatMap semantics, and why reactive pipelines outperform blocking code when I/O-bound tasks can run concurrently. The author also notes that multi-threaded blocking code can close the gap when operations are inherently sequential.
