The European Union is making significant strides in establishing secure satellite communications for its member states with the launch of the GOVSATCOM program. This innovative program, now operational, provides member states with secure satellite communications via pooled capacity from eight geosynchronous satellites operated by five countries. Functioning as a marketplace, the system allows EU nations to request services from a diverse range of 35 different programs, covering geographical regions stretching from Greenland to India.
GOVSATCOM’s capabilities are set to expand in 2027 with the integration of additional commercial solutions and will further evolve to incorporate the 290-satellite IRIS² constellation by 2029. Designed to offer global coverage and complete European control, IRIS² is part of a broader EU initiative to strengthen its sovereignty in secure communications and internet services.
The EU is accelerating the deployment of the IRIS² constellation, targeting the commencement of initial communication services in 2029, a year ahead of schedule. This multi-orbit network aims to deliver encrypted communications for governments and high-speed internet services for EU citizens, mitigating reliance on American systems, notably Starlink. Although the launch of GOVSATCOM marks a significant step in this journey, the EU acknowledges that it currently trails behind SpaceX in satellite launch capabilities. In response, individual member states like Germany and France are investing in additional space defense initiatives to bolster Europe’s standing in space technology.
