The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) has published a workshop report outlining grand challenges for converging AI and citizen science. Drawing on input from 46 experts across academia, NGOs, industry, and federal agencies, the report identifies five strategic priorities: creating novel human-AI interaction models, improving feedback loops between volunteers and scientists, building trustworthy systems, ensuring data security and privacy, and designing scalable infrastructure. Key recommendations include establishing a national convergence infrastructure, advancing foundational socio-technical research, and developing human capital. The report argues that volunteer citizen scientists provide data labeling, analysis, and creativity that complements AI capabilities, and that combining both can accelerate scientific discovery across ecological, clinical, and infrastructural domains.
