The OpenSSF Mentorship Program, run through the BEAR Working Group (Belonging, Empowerment, Allyship, and Representation), helps underrepresented people break into open source software security. In the 2025 cycle, two out of three mentees for the rstuf project became official project maintainers. The 2026 paid mentorship cycle runs June 1–August 21, with applications open March 24–April 12. Participating projects include gittuf, rstuf, SBOMit, and Minder. Key advice: mentors should prioritize clear communication and flexibility; mentees should not fear their background and do pre-onboarding research on the project.
