The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is leaving X (formerly Twitter) after nearly 20 years, citing a dramatic collapse in reach — from 50-100 million monthly impressions in 2018 to roughly 13 million for all of 2025. EFF points to Musk's dismantling of the human rights team, rollback of user protections, and failure to deliver on transparency and security improvements as key reasons. EFF will remain on Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms, explaining that marginalized communities depend on those spaces and that presence is not endorsement. Going forward, EFF will focus its social media efforts on Bluesky, Mastodon, and other platforms.
