As compute becomes more powerful at the Edge, what does this mean for what we've so far consider cloud-native? Is there a an edge-native application pattern arising, and what does this mean in terms of how my toolbox is expanding?

In this session we'll present an overview of how cloud-native application patterns have emerged over the last ten years, and how powerful edge-compute services are impacting what could be considered established cloud-native application patterns.

The session will feature CNCF projects, public cloud providers and services, and edge-compute providers and services. The focus will be on guiding to build according to good architectural patterns that fits the use-cases you need to solve for.

The session combines overviews and examples with demos, using among other things, the CNCF project Spin, to inspire you to think about how and where edge-compute platforms can be of great benefits to what you do today.

Edge-native applications represent a shift from traditional cloud-native architectures by distributing compute workloads across the compute continuum—from core data centers to distributed regions to edge locations. Using WebAssembly and the Spin framework, developers can write applications once and selectively deploy components to different locations at deployment time without recompilation. This approach enables sub-millisecond response times, dramatic resource efficiency (40KB binaries, <1 milliCPU idle), and true portability across architectures and platforms. The demonstration shows deploying a multi-component blog application with parts running on Kubernetes (AKS) and parts on edge locations, maintaining seamless inter-component communication while optimizing for latency and cost.
