Edge functions are often oversold for general application use. The core problem is that most apps need database access, and edge runtimes (V8 isolates) cannot make traditional TCP-based database connections, forcing workarounds that add latency and complexity. Additionally, CPU time limits (10–30ms on Cloudflare Workers free/paid tiers) make edge unsuitable for non-trivial computation. Edge functions genuinely excel at stateless, lightweight tasks: geolocation redirects, JWT validation before origin, A/B testing, caching/header manipulation, and rate limiting with edge-native storage. For most indie hackers and small teams, the recommended architecture is traditional serverless (Lambda, Railway, Fly.io) in a single region close to your database, with Cloudflare CDN in front for global static asset delivery, and a thin edge layer only for specific concerns like auth or routing. Edge becomes the right call only when users are globally distributed with strict latency requirements, content is primarily cached/static, or you design your data layer around edge-native storage from the start.
