The Eclipse Foundation has launched the Open VSX Managed Registry, a foundation-operated managed service for VS Code-compatible extension distribution. Open VSX is the open source, vendor-neutral alternative to Microsoft's proprietary VS Code Marketplace, now serving over 300 million downloads per month with peak daily traffic exceeding 200 million requests. The managed service offers commercial customers a 99.95% uptime SLA, defined support tiers, and enterprise-grade reliability, while keeping free access for individual developers and open source projects. Initial enterprise customers include AWS, Google, and Cursor. The move is driven by AI-native IDEs and coding agents dramatically increasing machine-to-machine traffic, changing the economics of extension registry infrastructure.
