EB Games, a subsidiary of GameStop, has announced the closure of all 38 of its stores in New Zealand by January 31, 2026. The decision follows years of financial struggles, including multi-million dollar losses reported in fiscal 2024, and unsuccessful attempts to turn the business around over the past three years. Despite efforts to find buyers or sustainable solutions, including discussions with third parties, the New Zealand operations were deemed non-viable.
Managing Director Shane Stockwell stated that all New Zealand administrative staff were laid off in early 2024, and further details regarding the exact number of affected employees remain unclear. However, there may be opportunities for some staff members to relocate to the company’s Australian operations, where EB Games continues to thrive with 336 stores.
Additionally, the distribution center in New Zealand is set to close a month later, on February 28, 2026. While the New Zealand division faces shutdown, EB Games Australia will continue its operations unaffected.
