As a React developer, I spend a lot of time with Visual Studio Code. I love creating components in React from predefined templates, linters, and code formatting tools to improve code quality. You make an interesting point that I never thought about needing to defend (I never got to the point of studying programming in college). Root knowledge is essential to understanding how best to code efficiently, not just effectively. But, I do also think cheat sheets serve as an amazing tool to help introduce me to areas of SDKs, APIs, and languages I’ve not mastered by allowing me to quickly see the properties and methods (and, when applicable, relatable object inheritance trees) that I’ve not yet known either due to lack of knowledge or updates… as in the case of Java/ECMAScript – the first 10-15 years I wrote JavaScript I never saw any specification updates (due to many reasons, but browsers were differently implementing their own divergent “enhancements” which created the fertile ground upon which we had the browser testing “wars”. I’m so happy that we have JavaScript Specification updates now on an annual basis which are carefully reviewed and have consensus on inclusion by a diverse set of approving members at ECMAScript as well as other appropriate parties. It’s a little odd that some years there’s maybe 1-3 minor updates to the language and then another might include a far greater amount. But, since the v1.6 release everything is consumable easily to an average senior dev with some experience in the language.
