The team has grown from three engineers to twelve. You have a handful of services running in production. Kubernetes is doing its job. And then someone asks a question that nobody has a clean answer to: how do we give new engineers a way to deploy their services without breaking production?

Policy enforcement, runtime isolation, and least-privilege access can be embedded into platform and developer abstractions so self-service scales without governance and security becoming an afterthought.
That is the key insight for early stage teams. You do not need a platform team to have platform thinking. You just need the right foundations in place before you need them.
A vendor-neutral, community-driven platform under CNCF governance means no single company controls the roadmap and no surprise pricing change locks you in at the worst possible time. For a startup watching every dollar, that matters.
