Duolingo is making its B2-level advanced language learning content free for users across nine languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. Previously capped at A2 or B1 levels for free users, the new offering includes Advanced Stories for reading comprehension and DuoRadio for listening comprehension. Duolingo claims this makes it the only free app offering advanced-level learning across these languages at no cost, while competitors like Babbel and Busuu require paid subscriptions for similar content. The move is partly a growth strategy, as the company has 52.7 million daily active users but only 12.2 million paid subscribers, and comes amid slowing bookings growth.
