Trellix VP of threat intel John Fokker argues the security industry should stop glamorizing cybercriminals and instead mock and ridicule them. His team created the 'Dark Web Roast,' a blog using memes and mockery to highlight criminals' blunders — like a ransomware gang faking victims for content, or an exploit developer publicly devaluing his own $70K find. Fokker points to law enforcement operations like the LockBit takedown and FBI's Hive infiltration as examples of how public mockery and trust-fracturing tactics can be more effective than simply seizing infrastructure, which criminals can quickly rebuild.
