The debate about whether QA roles are still needed stems from misconceptions about what quality assurance actually involves. While AI and automation can handle repetitive testing tasks, skilled QA engineers provide value through early involvement in design discussions, systematic thinking about edge cases, and preventing problems before they're built. The issue isn't that QA is obsolete, but that the industry has often hired unqualified "clicker" testers instead of treating testing as a specialized engineering discipline. Effective QA requires technical skills, system understanding, and integration into development teams from day one, not separation as an afterthought.

Do we still need the QA role?

I like to say that if you’re designing something to be used by humans, then there’s no replacing having a human use it.

Too many times I seen software “tested” by devs. Between “good practices” and “needs to be done by Tuesday” some cheap ass genius came to “brilliant” idea he can cut expenses by adding one additional task to dev and removing professional tester.
Even Facebook &amp; Messager have now bugs after bugs.
But yeah, we don’t need QA. This cash should be moved to managers

With the rise of enshittification in tech, we need QA more than ever

There’s a reason why Q/A is a full job! IT’s not meant to be done by devs or by automations. It’s as important as being product designer, developper or architect. As a dev, I think Q/A is too underrated by everyone.
