There is a persistent rumour going around this week... Disney wants to buy Epic Games.  Is this true?  No idea, it is a rumour after all.  Even if Disney does want to buy Epic Games, unless CEO Tim Sweeney wants to sell it, the entire things is not going to happen.  That said, there are a TON of reasons why Disney might want to buy Epic Games, and we go through them and much more in this video.

Rumors are circulating about Disney potentially acquiring Epic Games following Epic's massive layoffs of over 1,000 employees (~20% of staff). Disney already invested $1.5 billion in Epic in 2024 and uses Unreal Engine for theme park rides, filmmaking (The Mandalorian), and Fortnite collaborations. A new Disney CEO historically makes big acquisitions early in their tenure. However, Tim Sweeney remains the controlling shareholder and unlikely to sell. The biggest concern for game developers is that Disney could make Unreal Engine proprietary, removing it from public availability — a scenario that would significantly impact the broader game development ecosystem.

Disney Buying Epic Games?

I could see Disney going after some of the game IP, Fornite being the obvious one. But not the Unreal engine. Sure, could be wishful thinking on my part, because I think it would become less popular in the game dev universe to be beholding to Disney and it’s lust for $

I do not foresee this happening. Tim Sweeney is a control freak and goes after “monopolies” like Steam, trying to appeal to the moral high ground just because he doesn’t control a monopoly. He does not seem like the type sell.

Tim Sweeney makes a lot of noise about how it’s unfair that Apple collects certain fees, and percentages, yet Sweeney’s own FortNight rips it’s creators off even worse yet nothing is done to them… wouldn’t mind seeing him lose his position and say
