Discord has announced a delay in its global age verification rollout to the second half of 2026, following significant backlash from its user community. Concerns were primarily about privacy and data security, particularly after a recent breach involving a third-party vendor that exposed approximately 70,000 users’ government ID photos.
Co-founder and CTO of Discord, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, admitted the company had difficulties in clearly communicating its plans to the public. He emphasized that more than 90% of users will not need to undergo age verification, as the company can ascertain adult status through factors like account age, payment methods, and server memberships. Only 10% of users, those accessing age-restricted content, will be required to verify their age.
To address privacy concerns, Discord is expanding its verification options to include credit card verification, in addition to the previously stated methods such as facial age estimation and ID submission. This decision comes on the heels of Discord’s ending of its partnership with Persona, an age-verification firm involved in a controversial and undisclosed test in the UK. Discord now mandates that any biometric verification must be performed entirely on-device, ensuring that user data is kept secure.
The company is committed to greater transparency regarding vendor data practices and continues to assure users of its dedication to data security and user privacy.
