Can’t stand systemd. It’s like someone threw a whole lot of things at a wall and decided everything that stuck would become part of it.
I mean, why are logfiles binary? I remember back in the old days when I could go to /var/log and find everything I needed, now I have to go through journalctl.
All I can say is thankfully distros often retained ‘service’, because I’ve had times where ‘systemctl restart [service]’ doesn’t always work, yet ‘service [service] restart’ works every time.
To me, and my experiences with systemd, it’s been nothing but pain compared to the old sysvinit.
I do admit, certain parts of systemd I have warmed up to, such as asyncronous starting up of services, it’s just the fact that everything is pushed through it that I object to.

For me systemd was the long awaited glue between the kernel and the os. It obsoletes a lot of problems that have been there for a long time. Be it network configuration mess between distros, logging mess with the need to setup rotation, init script mess and so on. I think it does all those things a lot better than all the other, partly scripted, systems and components. All this rant that it does “too much” I cannot agree. Yes, it’s more than just init scripts but that was long awaited, at least by me.

systemd is very useful. But once you buy into it, you’re stuck with it. After trying a linux system with runit and dinit I understood why people object systemd’s tentacles.
