I miss the days when our profession was respected and admired, and when you created something it felt glorious because there was struggle and craftsmanship behind it. You created value for someone but also value for yourself through the struggle, through the learning.
There’s no more craftsmanship, no more glory. Things have become too easy, anyone can create stuff these days and pass it off as “software development”. Clicking buttons to create a piece of software is not software development, chatting to your favorite LLM to “vibe” your app up is not software development. Yes, you create value but its empty and soulless, akin to putting lipstick on a pig.
I miss the good old days of struggling, of purpose.

I’m mostly tired of jobs where I fix trash code because companies outsourced to India or the like thinking it’d save time and money.
(No disrespect to actual talented Indian brothers.)

We will soon have plenty of time to rest.
However, something tells me we’ll be even more unhappy, then!
