The Debian Project is assessing how emerging age verification laws may affect it, particularly California's Digital Age Assurance Act (AB 1043, effective 2027) and a similar Brazilian law already in force. These laws could require operating systems and package managers to expose age-related signals to applications. Debian Project Leader Andreas Tille notes that it remains unclear how such regulations apply to a non-commercial, volunteer-driven project. SPI has initiated efforts to obtain legal guidance. A likely outcome is that obligations, if any, would fall on commercial redistributors rather than Debian itself, with Debian remaining open to optional contributions that help downstreams comply.
