Debian decides not to decide on AI-generated contributions

Debian developers debated a proposed general resolution (GR) on whether to allow AI-assisted or LLM-generated contributions to the project. The discussion surfaced disagreements over terminology (AI vs. LLM), ethical concerns about generative AI companies' data practices, copyright ambiguity, environmental impact, and the risk that AI contributions could undermine the onboarding pipeline for new human contributors. After a civil but inconclusive mailing-list debate, the GR was not formally submitted. The project will continue handling AI-related contributions case-by-case under existing policies, with most participants agreeing Debian is not yet ready to vote on a formal resolution.
