Focus on mastering foundational programming concepts and timeless technologies rather than constantly learning new frameworks and tools. Core skills like SQL, HTTP, data structures, design patterns, and clean code principles have remained relevant for decades and provide better long-term value than chasing trends. Soft skills like collaboration, negotiation, and persuasion are equally important for career growth. Energy is finite, so concentrate efforts on going deep into fewer essential topics rather than spreading attention across many surface-level subjects.

Dear Junior Coders: Stop Chasing Shiny Objects

Yes, but also don’t get stuck in “but 3 decades ago I learned XY and it’s still good, why do you want to upgrade”… Like, you still have to stay up to date and not miss epic new things, like, for example, Kubernetes, Containers, etc.

As technology and the market continue to evolve rapidly with the rise of AI, it remains essential for new developers to learn foundational concepts. This helps them understand how things work and enables them to ask the right questions when interacting with AI models.

What is a good way to do this as a junior dev. There are so many resources to choose. That could potentially be why they have shiny object syndrome

Honestly, I think that far less emphasis needs to be put on “what’s new and shiny” and way more needs to be put on “what do you find interesting about programming.” Not only for junior devs, but I feel like for junior devs specifically it’s a great way to approach learning. If you follow those pursuits you’ll not only learn more, but have a more foundational and deep understanding that will guide you into whatever the new shiny thing is later if that’s something that interests you.
